Today in Bollywood, Salman Khan is called Bollywood Bhai Jaan, but there was a time in Hindi cinema when not Salman Khan but Mehmood was called Bollywood Bhaijaan. Mehmood was a good actor and Mahmood has been a great actor of the 60’s and 70’s. Hindi cinema was incomplete without Mehmood’s acting and comedy.
Mehmood began his film career as a child artist in the 1942 film Kismat as the child character of Ashok Kumar. Mehmood’s father Mumtaz Ali was an excellent stage actor but his work could not work in the movies and his condition had become so bad that he became a beggar and that is why he had decided that none of his sons would enter the cinematographic career. He decided to set foot in the world of cinema and taught Meena Kumari table tennis during her difficult days and also became the driver of film director PS Santoshi.
Mehmood’s fortunes changed when he got the opportunity to work in the Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha film Parvarish and the Shammi Kapoor and Mala Sinha film Dil Tera Deewana, and his strong performance took him to the heights of his film career. There came a time when Mehmood’s popularity increased so much that people used to buy movie tickets only when Mahmood was at the movies.
With increasing popularity everyone started calling him Bhai Jaan and in Bollywood he was also called Bhai Jaan. Mehmood was a kind-hearted person, he helped all the new actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Aruna Irani and Rajesh Khanna to establish his career in Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan used to stay at Mehmood’s house during fighting days. Apart from this, Mahmud used to help the poor a lot and he himself used to go to the temples and mosques to distribute food to them.
